School safety Update Feb. 20, 2018

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

Dear BSD Students, Parents and Staff,

At the end of school today, Tuesday, February 20th school administration was notified of a potential verbal threat in the Jr.-Sr. High School. Upon notification, school administrators immediately notified the Bloomfield School Resource Officer to report the possible threat.  At this time, school administration and a Bloomfield School District Resource Officer have met with all parties.  A visit to the student's home was part of the investigation.  The student and parents cooperated fully with the investigation and no threats were confirmed.  The matter has been referred to the Bloomfield Police Department.  We want to thank our Bloomfield School Resource Officer for helping us complete this investigation.

We want to assure you that the Bloomfield School District and the Bloomfield Police Department are doing everything we can to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff.  We would encourage parents to talk with their children regarding school safety and the severity of threats directed towards students, staff and our schools.  In addition, we want our students to inform us of any safety concerns.

Thank you for your time.

Jeff Gibboney, Superintendent

Bloomfield School District

Welcome to the Bloomfield School District.  We serve grades KG-12 on one campus – which includes Bloomfield Elementary School (KG through Grade 6) and Bloomfield Jr.-Sr. High School (Grades 7-12).  Our students are pushed to learn and achieve academically through a variety of core curriculum and support services that meet the unique educational, social and emotional needs of each child.  Our faculty and staff work with students and their parents to provide quality educational opportunities in a structured, safe and supportive learning environment.

As the new superintendent, I am proud of the opportunities our district continues to provide for our students.  In August, we launched our STEM and Vex robotics programs in the Elementary School.   Bloomfield Jr.-Sr. High School continues to offer students an outstanding opportunity to participate in our Early College programs to earn college credit.  We support an active FFA, as well as a world class NJROTC program.  It is one of the few in this area and has maintained an excellent reputation for being very active.  In addition, Bloomfield was recently awarded an IDOE Innovation Planning Grant in the amount of $30,000 to support the study of our study of digital learning and 1:1 student computing.  It is our goal to bring 1:1 student computing to Bloomfield in the very near future!

These are just a few examples of the wonderful activities taking place in our schools.  If you are interested in joining the Bloomfield community, please contact me directly at (812) 384-4507.  I would love to share with you all of the reasons why Bloomfield School District is a very special place.

Jeff Gibboney, Superintendent
